 Tourism Across the Niger

A landmark on-foot trek from Abuja through Kogi, Niger, Edo and Delta States, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the FCT Tourism Department, to showcase Nigeria’s diverse tourism offerings.

The Journey:Kogi State — The first stop, featuring the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers and the historic city of Lokoja, with a warm reception from the state’s tourism volunteer chapter. – Edo State — A stop rich in cultural depth, centred on the ancient city of Benin, renowned for its bronze artworks and royal heritage, with the visit coinciding with local festivals. – Delta State — The final leg of phase one, taking in the oil-rich regions and the bustling city of Asaba, Kwale and surrounding communities. – Return to Abuja (FCT) — A large homecoming event at the National Art Council, bringing together the Director of Tourism, FCT tourism volunteers and the Abuja Entertainment team, followed by a celebratory reception at Jabi featuring cultural performances and stakeholder speeches.

Legacy: “Tourism Across the Niger” set a precedent for community-driven tourism development in Nigeria, demonstrating the power of collaboration between government, volunteers and local communities.
